8 Reasons Travelling Solo is the Best

12 January 2023

Everyone feels apprehensive about solo travelling – until they do it themselves. Solo travel is something scary for those who have never experienced it before, but it’s the challenge, the adventure and the chance you get to expand your horizons that pulls you in the most. You’re discovering new places while also discovering yourself, and it’s an exhilarating opportunity. You should never be afraid to make the leap and travel by yourself. You can explore so much more when you’re on your own, and it’s something you should be excited to do!

It doesn’t matter if your travels include luxury hotels, couch-surfing through the countries you plan to visit or you want to rent an apartment – you can stay wherever you want to stay. One of the biggest attractions of solo travel is the ability to choose exactly how you want to sleep, move, and be. It’s all up to you. Do you still need convincing? Well, let’s take a closer look at eight reasons that you should travel by yourself.

You’re Not Alone

First, when you travel solo, you’re not necessarily travelling alone. I know, it sounds backwards, but it’s not. Think about it; when you aim to travel solo, what you mean is travelling without the kids or your partner. It means setting off alone, but it doesn’t necessarily mean staying that way. When you travel alone, you get to live like a local and get to know the people as you go along. You’ll find people are more open to speaking to you when you aren’t dealing with kids climbing all over you. You’ll also find that it’s so much easier to make friends when you are on your way to the other side of the world. You’ll be more confident in asking for help from others, too, surprising yourself with how easy it is to talk to other people.

You’ll Find Value in Your Experiences

The money you spend on travelling by yourself may shock you, but it’s this money that would have gone on stuff. And none of that stuff means much when you can get far more from the experiences you find as a solo traveller. You’re investing in yourself when you book a trip by yourself; you are worth that investment and your personal growth is important, too.

You Will Never Be the Same Again

Let’s face it: you’re off on these adventures to find something about yourself that you couldn’t find before – why would you want to be the same person on your return? This is your chance to embrace new cultures and a new way of living, even if it is only temporary. It speaks volumes if you can come back from a trip and know you’ve changed something about yourself forever.

The Bug Will Bite

…and we’re not talking about actual bugs! The bug to travel, to see the world from a new perspective and to experience more places than the ones you saw for the first time, will bite and it will bite you HARD. Solo travel may scare you at first, but it will be something that you’re hooked on forever when you’ve done it.

Time Alone to Think

Space from work, family and social stuff gives you a moment to breathe, reflect and decide what to do next in life. It can give you a moment of pause for enough time to decide what your next move will be, and it’s so much better to have these moments on a beach in Indonesia over the crowded lounge at home!

A Chance For a Break

If you’re a parent, you’ll appreciate the time that you take for a real break from home. There’s nothing wrong with your family or spending time with them, but sometimes you just need to reach out to yourself and know what’s best for you for once. It makes such a difference to your spirit, and you can return to them feeling refreshed and ready for anything.

A Chance For a Challenge

Have you ever wanted to paraglide? Jump off a bridge (with a bungee rope!)? Well, now is your chance. A solo jaunt is the time to take to challenge yourself in ways that you never thought possible.

You’re in Control

Lastly, you are in complete control of your own itinerary. If you want to go off course, you can. If you want to change your ticket because you’ve fallen in love with an area, you can. It’s all up to you, and this kind of control cannot be gained when you travel as a group.
