How to Pack Light for a Weekend Staycation (Without Forgetting Anything)

12 June 2025

With summer staycations and long weekends on the rise, it’s no surprise that many of us are planning short breaks to unwind and make the most of the sunny weather. But before you zip up that suitcase, here’s a common pitfall that could make your mini-break more stressful than serene: overpacking.

Richard Edwards, Owner of White House Hideaway, which offers secluded log cabins near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, has witnessed countless guests arrive with oversized luggage for what should be simple weekend escapes.

“People often pack as if they’re going away for two weeks when they’re only staying for two nights,” explains Edwards. “The irony is that overpacking actually works against the very relaxation they’re seeking from their staycation.”

It might not seem like a big deal—packing a few extras “just in case”—but bringing too much for a two-night stay can lead to clutter, confusion, and even a grumpy start to your getaway. The truth is, when it comes to weekend trips, less really is more.

How to Pack Smart for a Weekend Staycation

1. Keep It Simple With a Capsule Wardrobe

Aim for a few versatile pieces that mix and match. Choose a colour palette (think two or three complementary tones) so you can easily rotate outfits without needing loads of clothes. One pair of jeans, a couple of tops, and a light jacket should cover most scenarios. If you’re off to the countryside, you won’t need three pairs of heels or a full evening wardrobe.

2. Check the Weather and Your Plans

A quick peek at the forecast and your itinerary can stop you from packing for every possible weather condition or unlikely scenario. And don’t forget to check what your accommodation provides—many UK staycation spots offer toiletries, towels, and hairdryers, so there’s no need to double up.

3. Roll, Don’t Fold

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them saves space and keeps your bag more organised. T-shirts, underwear, and casual items roll especially well. Place any easily creased items on top, neatly folded.

4. Downsize Your Bag

Choose a smaller holdall or cabin-sized case—it’ll naturally limit what you can bring and help you be more selective. If you take a big suitcase, chances are you’ll fill it… even if you don’t need to.

5. Set Boundaries With the “One-Week Rule”

Even if you’re only away for a couple of nights, pretend you’re packing for a week—but only bring what you’ll definitely wear. This helps avoid stuffing your bag with things “just in case” that never leave the bottom.

Common Weekend Packing Mistakes

If you’re looking to make your next staycation feel easy and breezy from start to finish, try to avoid these frequent packing blunders:

  • Bringing Too Many “What If” Outfits
That formal dress you might wear if you stumble upon a swanky dinner spot? It’ll probably stay in your bag. Pack for what you know you’re doing, not vague possibilities.
  • Too Many Shoes
Shoes are bulky and heavy. One comfy pair for walking and one smarter pair (if needed) is all you really need. Three or more is usually overkill for a short break.
  • A Full-Size Toiletry Haul
There’s no need to pack your entire bathroom cabinet. Travel-sized versions or small refillable containers are perfect for a weekend away, and much lighter too.

In a nutshell? Travel lighter, breathe easier, and actually enjoy your break without tripping over unnecessary stuff in your cabin or cottage. Your future weekend self will thank you.
