Four Ways to Find the Hidden Side Of Florida

We all have an image of the vacation in Florida that we think we know – huge theme parks, golden beaches, alligators and oversized meals in chain restaurants. And while it’s true that all these things are easily found, there is so much more to the destination once you scratch the surface. Popularly known as the Sunshine State, Florida is famous for its warm, sunny climate and has rightly claimed a reputation as one of the main pleasure-seeking destinations to take a break. But the state is so big, that there is a huge variety of things to see, do and eat – meaning that whether you’re a solo traveller, looking for a couples break, a family vacation or even if you’re an older traveller, there will be something there to surprise and delight you.

Of course, if you head to Orlando you can have what most people think of as the classic Florida experience – exploring Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens and other theme parks. Those wanting to focus on nightlife and partying their trip away can head to Miami. And travellers who want to relax and have some R&R may prefer the Florida Keys or one of the Islands. It is possible to have completely different types of experiences in different parts of Florida – and there are many hidden gems which can make it the trip of the lifetime.

Go Kayaking in Bahia State Park

If your idea of heaven on a holiday is immersing yourself in nature, then a visit to Bahia State Park should be top of your list. One for outdoor adventures and nature enthusiasts, Bahia State Park spans over 500 acres of pristine, natural land, including an offshore island. If you enjoy snorkelling, this is a great spot to do it, or you can go beachcombing on one of the beautiful sandy bays –  it’s definitely a hidden island paradise. The highlight of any trip must surely be renting a kayak and exploring the stunning coastline or taking a boat out to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary just off the coast to experience the amazing underwater life Florida has to offer. If the park’s beauty gets to you and you want to stay longer, rent a cabin or sleep under the stars at the campground right on the beach. A unique side of Florida that many tourists don’t know about.

Take a Foodie Tour By Boat

Miami’s fine dining and small brewery scene is blossoming, and what could be better than making arrangements to rent a boat in Miami and cruising up and down the coast sampling some of what’s rapidly becoming known as a foodie mecca? Start your day with a leisurely brunch at The Cafe at Books & Books – an independent bookstore where you can find some treasure or attend author signings before your blueberry pancakes and coffee. Later in the day, power along the coast to Rouge, considered one of the finest French dining experiences on offer in Miami, blending traditional Cordon Bleu stylings with a hint of Morocco. The beautiful central courtyard with its Moorish design, dripping in bougainvillaea blooms, plays host to live jazz music in the evenings.

Hang Out Like a Local in Winter Park

If you’re looking for an authentic slice of Florida life, head just north of Orlando in a rental car to spend a day in the charming city of Winter Park. There’s a whole host of arts and cultural events happening downtown to explore all year round, plus the location is famed for its farmer’s markets which offer the best of Floridian produce – the fresh-squeezed orange juice is an absolute must! Enjoy the scenery, and the relaxed pace of life and soak up some of the culture to discover the real Florida.

Find a Bargain in Fort Lauderdale

If shopping with soul is your thing, swerve the glossy mega malls and discount outlets that Florida is best known for, and head over to Fort Lauderdale for a flea market experience instead. Retro kitsch, American memorabilia, vintage clothes and more can be found here – who knows what treasure you might unearth? With over 180,000 square feet termed The Swap Shop and home to 2,00 vendors plus international cuisine at the many little restaurants on-site, there’s certainly plenty to look at – plus, the destination is also home to one of the largest drive-in movie theatres in the state, so you can have your Grease moment watching a movie to unwind after all that bargain hunting.

At the flea market, choose from 2,000 vendors selling bargain items, and have a delicious meal at one of the many international restaurants located on-site. Check out their amusement rides and farmers market as well, or catch a film on one of the largest drive-in movie theatres in the state!
