6 Tips for Keeping Safe While Travelling

24 January 2023

Travelling is a lot of fun and something most of us would love to do more of. However, it is so important to be safe during your holiday or trip. Staying in an unknown country or city of which you have no knowledge can be dangerous for you. Apart from robbers and pickpocketing, you can also be vulnerable to certain diseases, unnecessarily high prices and life-threatening situations. It is important to have a good knowledge of how you can be safe while travelling anywhere. It is not possible to know everything about a place beforehand, but you can always follow some tips to help you be safe.

Here are six tips for keeping safe while travelling:

Research the country you plan to visit

Before you plan a trip to someplace or you are going there on a business trip, make sure you check about the country and the usual scams that go around there to keep you informed. It will also help you to know how safe you will be and what emergency equipment you should carry. You can also check the US Department of state which will inform you about the problems you can face in each country. You should do good research before going to an unknown land. These websites usually have in-depth information about crimes and safety for a country.

Hotel Safety

Be sure you know and remember the name of your hotel if you’re visiting a place which has difficult names. Write it down on a piece of paper and keep it in your wallet. Make sure you don’t reveal your hotel name to strangers that ask you where you are staying. You can always lie or pretend not to remember the name. Revealing your hotel could be a threat to your life. Make sure you check with your hotel for any visitors before opening your door to a stranger. Check with your hotel if they have an emergency button to make you alert to an urgent situation. Don’t just book cheap hotels to save money – make sure they are in a good area first.

Embassy Registration

If you’re going to a country where you have no local contacts and would be there for a long time, make sure you inform your embassy before going. They will keep you updated on all security risks and will make sure you are safe. The embassy of your country will inform the embassy abroad. This helps to rescue you from any natural disaster or any other hazard that may occur while you’re there. They would also know if something happened to you and would come to your help immediately. Registering with the embassy will help you not disappear in a foreign land.

Valuables

Keeping your valuables safe is a prime concern for every traveller. Make sure you don’t carry a lot of cash everywhere and have a backup place for cash in case you get mugged. Hold tight to your phones and cameras and try not to catch someone’s attention too much. Ask your hotel if they have a locker or any other safe place where you can lock your valuables before leaving the hotel. Don’t wear heavy or expensive jewellery that might make you a target for robbers. If you’re travelling on a local bus or metro, make sure you keep a good eye on your bag at all times and keep it with you where possible.

Emergency Information and Itinerary

People usually don’t follow this procedure but it should be an important part of your travelling plan. You won’t get time or the resources to look for emergency contacts during an emergency situation. Make sure you note down emergency contacts of the country you are visiting and keep them in your wallet. You can also note it down on your phone or any other devices you carry with you. If you’re travelling alone, make sure someone knows about your trip. Share your tickets and travel plans with your family or friend. Also, never post a picture of your itinerary or current location on social media as it can be tracked.

Basic Tips

Some basic tips should be followed while visiting any country. You should be very conscious while you’re in a taxi, especially if you’re travelling at night. Make sure you know the plate number of the taxi and use Google maps to keep track of your route. Don’t reveal too much of your plans to complete strangers such as taxi drivers or a random person you get chatting to in a coffee shop. You can use the hotel reception to ask about local prices, localities to avoid and other ways to keep yourself safe in a particular location.

It is impossible to eliminate all of the risks of travelling but following these tips will make sure you’re informed and prepared.
