The Best UK Wild Swimming Spots to Reduce Stress in Just 5 Minutes

16 September 2025

28th September is World Rivers Day – a celebration of the waterways that shape our landscapes, sustain wildlife, and give us places to relax, recharge, and explore. Rivers and natural pools aren’t just beautiful; they’re proven to boost our wellbeing and offer a sense of calm connection with nature.

One of the most rewarding ways to enjoy the UK’s rivers is through wild swimming. More and more of us are taking the plunge, with an estimated 7.5 million Brits now venturing into rivers, lakes, and seas for that refreshing cold-water dip. To mark the occasion, Showers To You have highlighted some of the UK’s most breathtaking hidden wild swimming spots – perfect if you’re craving adventure away from the crowds.

The Top Hidden Wild Swimming Spots in the UK

If you’re looking to escape the crowds and dive into nature, here are five of the most beautiful wild swimming spots across the UK – ranked by temperature, seclusion, and overall experience.

Llyn Cau, Cadair Idris – Snowdonia National Park

High in the rugged heart of Snowdonia, Llyn Cau is a glacial lake nestled in the crater of Cadair Idris and surrounded by towering 400m cliffs. Getting there is part of the magic – a two-hour hike along rocky paths brings you panoramic views over the valleys before you reach the shimmering waters.

The average water temperature sits at a bracing 14.8°C, but the reward is an unforgettable swim in complete isolation. With its dramatic setting and sense of remoteness, Llyn Cau tops the list with a score of 8.57. Afterwards, head to the nearby market town of Dolgellau for a cosy pub meal or a slice of cake in one of its independent cafés.

Cuckmere Meanders – South Downs National Park

The winding Cuckmere River flows through the rolling hills of the South Downs, forming gentle oxbow lakes on its way to the English Channel. Surrounded by meadows and wildflowers, it’s a slice of classic English countryside that feels wonderfully peaceful.

The calmer waters here average 16°C, making it slightly more inviting than a mountain plunge. Although close to Hastings, the lakes still offer a sense of privacy and scored 8.52 overall. Once you’ve had your swim, the seaside town of Seaford is perfect for a coffee stop or a stroll along the coast.

Long Pool, Watersmeet – Devon

Tucked away in the wooded valleys of Watersmeet, Long Pool is a truly magical spot. With waterfalls, ferns, and ancient oak trees all around, it feels like stepping into another world. Victorian footbridges and historic paths add to its charm, while the cool water (around 15.7°C) makes for a refreshing dip in a serene setting.

With a score of 8.45, it’s one of the best forest swimming spots in the country. The nearby town of Lynton is worth a visit too, with spectacular views over the Bristol Channel from its dramatic clifftop perch.

Tanners Lane, Lymington – Hampshire Coast

If you’d rather head to the sea, Tanners Lane offers a wild and rugged beach experience near Lymington. Backed by salt marshes and cliffs, it feels untouched and beautifully natural. The mix of sand, pebbles, and tidal pools makes it perfect for exploring as well as swimming.

With water averaging 16.3°C and an overall score of 8.44, it’s slightly less secluded due to its location near Southampton, but still feels like a coastal escape. Plus, you’re on the doorstep of the New Forest National Park, so you can easily combine your swim with a woodland walk or a bike ride.

Watkins Path Waterfalls – Snowdon

For another Snowdonia gem, follow the quieter Watkins Path trail up the mountain. The route leads you through valleys and woodland, past dramatic waterfalls and into natural pools that feel wonderfully wild. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife – from trout darting in the river to birds of prey soaring overhead.

The average water temperature here is a brisk 14.8°C, and with an overall score of 8.42, it’s a brilliant reward after a mountain walk. The nearby village of Beddgelert, with its riverside pubs and historic bridges, makes a charming spot to warm up afterwards.

Why try wild swimming?

Whether it’s a glacial mountain lake or a hidden woodland pool, just five minutes in wild water is enough to reduce stress and lift your mood. It’s a natural reset button – one that combines adventure, exercise, and the soothing power of nature.

Staying safe while wild swimming

As magical as wild swimming can be, it’s important to put safety first. Always check the depth of the water before diving in, and be mindful of hidden rocks, strong currents, or slippery banks. Enter the water slowly to let your body adjust to the temperature, and never swim alone – it’s best to have a friend with you.

If you’re swimming in rivers, avoid areas near weirs or fast-flowing sections, and in coastal spots, keep an eye on tides and weather conditions. A warm towel or dryrobe, dry clothes, and a flask of tea can make all the difference after your swim, too.

Wild Swimming Safety Checklist

  • Check the depth before entering – avoid diving into unknown waters
  • Watch out for hidden rocks, weeds, and strong currents
  • Enter the water slowly to let your body adjust to the temperature
  • Never swim alone – always bring a friend
  • Steer clear of weirs, dams, and fast-flowing sections of rivers
  • Check tide times and weather conditions before coastal swims
  • Bring a warm towel, dry clothes, and a hot drink for afterwards

This World Rivers Day, why not grab a towel and explore one of these secret swimming spots? You’ll come away feeling calmer, happier, and more connected to the wild side of the UK.
