Sightseeing With Children: How to Make it Stress-Free & Fun

4 January 2022

Sightseeing is an activity that no holiday would be complete without. It encourages you to explore a place of interest in a new city or country and learn more about its history and origins.

But while most parents find sightseeing interesting and exciting, often their children do not. Bored children can often result in tears and tantrums which can put you off sightseeing altogether. While you want to keep your kids happy, you should still make sure your holiday includes what you want to do too. Rather than removing sightseeing from your itinerary, use these tricks to help your kids see just how fun it can be.

Encourage them to take pictures

One of the easiest ways to get your children excited about sightseeing is by giving them their own camera. Present them with their new camera when you reach your sightseeing location and ask them to take pictures of what they find interesting. This will encourage them to take a closer look at the building or environment which can help them appreciate it more.

No matter how old your children are, there are many different child-friendly cameras to choose from. These are often robust and easy to use, as well as being brightly coloured. To get prepared before your holiday, read reviews to find the most appropriate and affordable options for your kids.

Have plenty of activities planned

The best thing you can do when you’re sightseeing with your children is to ensure there are plenty of things for them to do. Do some research into the site you are visiting and create some simple games for your kids to play. You can ask them to do a drawing of the building you are visiting or count how many windows it has. It can also be beneficial to see if there are any kids clubs or playgrounds nearby too. This will stop them from getting bored by keeping them preoccupied.

Another option is to take part in an escorted tour, which will take you to multiple sightseeing locations across a certain time frame. This can take the stress out of having to choose which places to visit and how you are going to get there. You can learn more about escorted tours online or by talking to your travel agent.

Show them where you are going

Before you set off on your sightseeing adventure, use your phone and show your kids where you are going. Many children are often anxious about visiting unfamiliar places, and this can make them more likely to act out. So taking the time to show them pictures of a location can help them feel more prepared and less afraid. As well as showing them pictures on your phone, why not also learn a bit more about where you are going together. You can read stories and learn facts about a site, which is bound to fill you all with excitement. Make sure your accommodation has a good wifi connection or talk to your phone provider about data roaming.

As you can see, there are plenty of things you can do to reduce stress and enhance yours and your kid’s sightseeing experience. Exploring the world around you will soon become your family’s favourite holiday activity.
