Tips to Keep Kids Happy and Entertained While Travelling

28 June 2024

Travelling with children can be challenging, but with the right preparation and a few strategic tips, it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience. Ensuring your kids are entertained and happy during the journey and throughout the holiday is key to a stress-free trip for the entire family. From using a kids outdoor playhouse and swings at your destination to engaging in interactive travel games, there are numerous ways to keep boredom at bay and make your travels more enjoyable. Here are some effective strategies to keep your little ones entertained and happy while travelling.

1. Plan Ahead and Involve the Kids

Preparation is crucial when travelling with children. Before setting off, involve your kids in the planning process. Let them help choose destinations, activities, and even meals. This involvement gives them a sense of control and builds excitement for the trip. Create a loose itinerary that balances structured activities with downtime, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

2. Pack Smart

Packing the right items can make a world of difference. Bring along a variety of toys, books, and games to keep your children entertained. Consider the duration of your journey and pack enough activities to last the trip. Portable games, colouring books, and puzzles are great for keeping kids occupied on planes, trains, and automobiles. Remember comfort items like a favourite blanket or stuffed animal, which can provide a sense of security in unfamiliar surroundings.

3. Embrace Technology Wisely

While it’s important to limit screen time, technology can be a lifesaver during long journeys. Load tablets or smartphones with educational apps, games, and movies that your children enjoy. Audiobooks and podcasts are also excellent for keeping kids entertained and can be a relaxing alternative to screen time. Make sure to bring headphones to keep the noise levels down.

4. Engage in Interactive Travel Games

Interactive games can make the journey more enjoyable for everyone. Classics like “I Spy,” “20 Questions,” and the “Licence Plate Game” are perfect for car rides. For flights or train journeys, card games and portable board games can be a hit. These games not only pass the time but also encourage family bonding.

5. Explore Nature and Outdoor Activities

Once you’ve reached your destination, take advantage of outdoor activities to keep your kids active and engaged. Parks, beaches, and nature trails offer endless opportunities for exploration and play. Many holiday accommodations provide amenities like kids’ outdoor playhouses and swings, which can be an excellent way for children to burn off energy and make new friends.

6. Incorporate Educational Elements

Travelling is a fantastic opportunity for children to learn about new cultures, history, and geography. Visit museums, historical sites, and cultural landmarks. Turn these visits into scavenger hunts or quiz games to make learning fun. Encourage your children to keep a travel journal, documenting their experiences and what they’ve learned.

7. Maintain a Routine

While it’s tempting to throw routines out the window during a holiday, maintaining some semblance of a schedule can help keep kids happy. Try to keep regular meal times and bedtimes as much as possible. A familiar routine provides a sense of stability and can prevent meltdowns caused by hunger or exhaustion.

8. Snack Smart

Hungry kids are grumpy kids. Pack a variety of healthy snacks to keep your children satisfied between meals. Nuts, fruit, granola bars, and crackers are easy to carry and can stave off hunger during travel. Stay hydrated as well, especially on long flights or car rides.

9. Be Flexible and Patient

Travel rarely goes exactly as planned. Flights get delayed, weather changes and attractions can be closed. Flexibility and patience are essential. Be prepared to adjust your plans and go with the flow. Having a positive attitude can make all the difference in how your children perceive the situation.

10. Create Memorable Moments

Finally, focus on creating lasting memories. Take plenty of photos, collect souvenirs, and savour the special moments together. Encourage your children to reflect on their favourite parts of the trip and share their experiences. These memories will stay with them long after the holiday is over.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your travels are filled with joy, adventure, and minimal stress. Keeping kids entertained and happy while travelling requires a bit of planning and creativity, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Happy travels!
